Dry shampoo. It’s the saving grace for so many of us with busy schedules, but it’s also the culprit behind clogged follicles and awkward hair discoloration. Fortunately, these DIY dry shampoo recipes are non-toxic and can be customized to match all hair colors!

Why make dry shampoo at home?
- Hair Health- Instead of stripping your hair of it’s natural oils, you can use this DIY dry shampoo to save time between washes.
- Convenience- I can’t even count the number of times I was in desperate need for some de-greasing action, but after a 2 second spray, I’m out of dry shampoo. You can whip this recipe up in less than 5 minutes and be saved from your greasy nightmare.
- Non-Toxic- Most dry shampoos contain aerosolizers, preservatives, and synthetic fragrances. These ingredients can lead to respiratory issues, hormone disruption, and toxicity. Do you want to spray that all over your head? No thank you! With this recipe, you’ll only need 2-3 non-toxic ingredients. DIY Dry Shampoo Ingredients
- 1/4 cup arrowroot powder (or organic cornstarch)
- 5 drops of essential oil (optional)
- Choice of natural color- See Below
All DIY dry shampoo recipes will start with a base of 1/4 cup of arrowroot powder or organic cornstarch. From there, you’ll choose the appropriate ingredient to match your hair color. The amounts provided below are rough estimates. Adjust them according to the shade of your hair.
- Light Gray or Silver: The arrowroot powder base should work alone, but you can add bentonite clay if needed.
- Light Blonde: Arrowroot powder alone should do the trick.
- Strawberry Blonde: Add a hint of cinnamon.
- Dark Blonde/Light Brown: Add 1-2 tablespoons of cocoa powder.
- Brown: Include 2-3 tablespoons of cocoa powder.
- Dark Brown: Play with a combination of cocoa powder and a small pinch of activated charcoal (a little goes a long way).
- Red/Auburn: Cinnamon with a touch of cocoa powder will work well for red hair. Auburn may require more cocoa powder to match the darker shade.
- Black: Add in activated charcoal. A little goes a long way!
- Pastels: Arrowroot powder brushed through the hair should do the trick
