One of my favorite memories as a kid is spending the day out in the thick snow of Massachusetts. Afterwards, we’d strip off our wet snowsuits and boots, head over to the lit fireplace, and prop our feet up on the brick hearth while mom made some hot cocoa. I wanted to create a homemade hot cocoa recipe that brought those memories back to life, but without having to drink processed powders in order to do so.
about the ingredients of oat milk hot cocoa

milk
Oat Milk is used in this recipe because it’s naturally sweeter and offers a silky, creamy texture for the hot cocoa base. It’s also friendly for those who are vegan or lactose intolerant. I used the Oatly Barista Milk for this recipe, as its unsweetened but creamier than other oat milks that have a thinner consistency.
You can use whatever milk you prefer, though! Almond milk would add a lovely nutty taste, which would compliment the flavors in this recipe well. Coconut milk would result in a much more rich, creamy, and thicker hot cocoa. Regular ole cow’s milk would work just fine as long as you tolerate it and source it wisely!
sweetener & vanilla
This oat milk hot cocoa is sweetened with organic maple syrup, sugar in one of it’s purest forms! I used my homemade vanilla extract to add the warm flavor of vanilla bean to the mix.
chocolate
Organic cocoa powder provides the bulk of the chocolate flavor. Organic dark chocolate chips add a creamier chocolate flavor to the mix. Together they create the perfect balance of chocolatey delight.
